Jones’ 2-run drive off Happ lifts Pirates, 3-2
J.A. Happ looked like a rookie on the key pitch of the game, and Garrett Jones didn’t. The result was the National League’s best first-year pitcher was beaten by arguably its best first-year hitter, and the Pirates pulled off another surprising comeback against the Phillies. Happ (10-3), who lost for the first time in four decisions, was cruising following McCutchen’s drive into the center field shrubbery leading off the first. The left-hander allowed only four more hits over the next six innings and only once pitched with multiple runners on base. “He pitched too good a game to lose,” manager Charlie Manuel said. Somehow, he did. (AP)

Eagles version of wildcat with Vick needs work
The Michael Vick experiment lasted six plays before Donovan McNabb walked over to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg on the sideline and yelled “Cut!” Like a movie director who’s seen enough, McNabb wanted the offense to do another take. This time, without Vick. In his debut with the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, Vick did a little bit of everything—except help the offense score a touchdown. Playing his first NFL game since his release from prison, Vick lined up at quarterback, wide receiver and ran the wildcat formation. He completed four passes for 19 yards and ran once for a yard in his first action in 32 months. “Regardless of what we are doing, if I am out there, I just want to be productive,” Vick said. Maybe next time. The Eagles signed the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback to add a new dimension to their offense—a unit that scored a franchise-record 416 points last season without Vick. It’s obvious the Eagles coaching staff still has to figure out the best way to use Vick’s skills. Vick’s presence is intended to confuse defenses and make Philadelphia’s offense unpredictable. Instead, the Eagles looked out of sync when he was on the field with McNabb. Vick’s six plays in four series netted 3 points. That’s why McNabb decided it was time to tell the coaches to stop with the trickery and stick to what works. (AP)

Next 2 starts may tell Phils much more about Pedro
The Philadelphia Phillies still don’t know what they’ve got yet in Pedro Martinez. They might get a much better idea in his next two starts. Can he again be the strike-throwing, I-dare-you-to-hit-it pitcher he was while averaging nearly 17 wins per season for the Expos and Red Sox from 1997-2004? Or is the 37-year-old getting by with trickery and only a sliver of his former talent, as he often appeared to be doing the last few seasons with the Mets? The Phillies weren’t exactly certain after Martinez went 2-0 with a 5.14 ERA in his first three starts for them, including a 9-7 victory over the Mets on Sunday. The right-hander gave up seven hits, including two homers, and four runs in that game but won mostly because the Phillies’ offense kept adding on runs. A triple play after he was out of the game helped, too. (AP)

Vick on track to make Eagles debut Thursday
Michael Vick will make his Eagles debut Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars if all goes well over the next three days of practice, coach Andy Reid said Saturday. “I think there is a chance of that,” Reid said. “Right now that’s the plan. But we’ll see how it goes.” Vick signed with Philadelphia on Aug. 13 but was not allowed to play in the team’s first two preseason games under the provisions of his suspension from the league. Vick has worked the majority of his time at quarterback. If he does play Thursday, he would share time with starter Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb, who is coming back from a knee injury. (AP)

Utley’s 2-run shot lifts Phillies over Mets 4-1
J.A. Happ is showing the Philadelphia Phillies why he was so coveted at last month’s trade deadline. Rumored to be part of a potential trade with Toronto for ace Roy Halladay that never materialized, Happ is happy to still be with the Phillies and is pitching like it. The rookie left-hander shook off an early run and lasted seven innings in Philadelphia’s 4-1 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday night. “I feel good about going out there with the guys behind me,” said Happ, 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA in four August starts. “I’m trying to get a chance to win. I was able to hang around long enough.” Chase Utley hit a two-run homer as part of Philadelphia’s three-run sixth inning against New York’s bullpen. After Tim Redding held the Phillies to one hit through five shutout innings in a spot start, they broke out against relievers Pat Misch and Sean Green. (AP)
